In April, I had the opportunity to attend the Styling with DSE workshop. I was so excited to finally meet Kat after following her on Instagram, having so many mutual friends, and being a big fan of her work. Despite it being a little out of this photographer’s comfort zone, I really enjoyed the whole experience.
As a photographer and mentor, I have found myself in a lot of situations this year where styling has been important. This can be as simple as arranging an invitation suite on a wedding day to designing a large scale mock wedding for other creatives. It was a goal of mine this year to explore how to take this all to the next level. This workshop was exactly what I needed.
Even better? I’m working closely with Stephanie Scholl, a fellow attendee and wedding planner, with her website branding shoot this very weekend. I’ve said it before, but the relationships you have the ability to make in this type of atmosphere can be so amazing. I always feel a new door is opened after meeting a group of people interested in and passionate about the same things as I am.
I barely touched my camera during the event, which I’m happy to say was a goal achieved! I really wanted to be part of styling, seeing how others translated things, and being able to understand why certain decisions were made. I learned so many things, little and big, and I’m happy to see that Kat is offering another opportunity to attend in September. Implementing what I’ve learned into my business has allowed me to see details and photo opportunities differently, as well as appreciating how I can provide vendors with shots they will love too.
