WORKFLOW WEDNESDAY | THE DREADED QUESTION | ASHTON KELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY | MARYLAND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

dashingaffair-235As photographers, we often find ourselves being interviewed by couples in the planning phases of their wedding. During that time they have a chance to ask questions, tell us about their vision, and get to know our artistry. There are many we answer repetitively about second shooters, contracts, timelines, and more.. but there is one that always feels awkward, but it doesn’t have to!

Sometimes a question can make us uncomfortable. It can put us in a position to feel our reliability is doubted and implies we might not be able to offer our seemingly perfect service. We take what we do personally, so the last thing we want to think about is being in a position that keeps us from showing up on a wedding day. But hey, anything can happen, and it’s best to prepare your clients whether they ask or not.

I don’t worry when it comes. I know it might. I know from the moment we agree to speak further I am opening myself up to them to calm any concerns they might have. I am already prepared with an answer, as I am already prepared should this ever happen.

And so, they ask.. “What would happen if for some reason you couldn’t be there to photograph our wedding?”

It’s such a loaded question.

To answer it, hit on these points:

  1. Remind them that they’ve asked a wonderful question!
  2. Immediately roll into how you would handle the situation.
  3. Be sure to refer back to your contract, as this should be included within it.
  4. Open it up for them to ask questions, so the conversation continues smoothly, putting the ball back in their court.

Having the answer to that question will be just as comforting as the answer itself. Brides want to not only know they will be taken care of, but that these instances have already been foreseen. By including this in your contract, being prepared with answers of reassurance, and driving home that their wedding images are the most important thing.. you’ll find the answer to a dreaded question is a confident answer!

Great advice! I got asked this question a lot when I was pregnant, and you’re right, having a solid plan in place makes answering this question so much easier
