Taylor and Shelby went to the same high school together. They had mutual friends at Archbishop Spalding, but had never crossed paths. The pair met online in what Shelby refers to as the “OG online dating resource.” After coming home from a party, a friend asked if she wanted to get on Skype and chat with a few guy friends… one of which was Taylor!
Shelby and Taylor celebrate their anniversary as the day they met. That Skype date in January of 2010 really set the pace for these two. They just fell together. Shelby shared that there was a day later in July of that year where they verbally acknowledged it. Shelby said to Taylor, “So I’m just gonna make it official right now that you’re my boyfriend; we are dating.” Taylor just laughed, besides, he didn’t disagree.
It was the weekend of Taylor’s father’s 50th birthday. They were throwing a big party at Taphouse. Invitees included lots of family and a few close friends. Shelby’s family had even made arrangements to puppy-sit their dog, Zoe, so they could stay out late and celebrate without a fur-baby curfew.
Some time into the party, it was time for cake. Karen, Taylor’s Mom, called everyone over to gather. Marty, Taylor’s Dad, gave a little thank you speech to everyone for coming out. He shared how much it meant to him that everyone was there for his birthday, and then something odd happened.
Taylor got in front of the group and he began to thank them as well. Shelby was confused as to why Taylor would insert himself into his father’s event this way. She contemplated this for a moment and was brought back to reality as she heard Taylor say, “so let’s make this night a little more special… I have something to ask.” A moment later Taylor was down on one knee, Shelby was ugly crying. Taylor forgot to ask the question, but Shelby was screaming “YES!”
There was crying, laughter, kissing, and hugging. Taylor and Shelby were surrounded by friends and family, making it that much more special. When the shock began to wear off and Shelby looked out to the crowd, she felt a pit in her stomach. The idea that her family missed it nearly stopped her in her tracks. That’s when she saw them… her parents and Zoe, their dog… all there in the crew of happy faces staring back at them. How perfect is that?
