Cody and Betsy met their Freshman year of high school. They had gym class together. Cody’s last name starts with an A, which put him right at the beginning of any line. Betsy’s last name starts with a Z, placing her at the end. As luck would have it, they had a friend who landed right in the middle and ensured they were introduced. The pair were friends throughout four years of high school, but experienced a romantic spark right before graduation.
As they approached the end of high school, things were fun and flirty. Cody and Betsy had both already decided on separate colleges. Even knowing that their time might be limited, Cody still asked Betsy to be his official girlfriend. She responded, “you should really think about this” to which he replied, “I don’t need to think about it.” While dropping the subject for a quick minute, Cody asked again the next day. This time-Betsy said yes. They have spent the last eight years making memories.
Betsy was traveling for work at the time to South America. Cody would visit on any break Betsy had. They would use the time to pick a dream destination and travel there together. They started with Iguazu Falls and went on to see Rio de Janeiro, Brazil over New Years 2017, Bariloche, Mendoza Argentina, Machu Picchu, Peru, San Andres, Cartagena, Medellin, and Columbia. The next trip planned was on the North side of Panama. They booked a romantic cabana which was picture perfect upon arrival.
Cody and Betsy spent their vacation soaking up the sun. They used the time to paddle board, sun bathe, kayak, and relax. Both were enjoying life. One night, they walked out to watch the sun set. Cody hugged Betsy from behind as she looked out onto the water, telling her that he loved her. Slightly distracted, she didn’t notice that Cody had knelt down on his knee behind her. He got her attention once more, opening the ring box, and asked her to marry him. Her response?
“Shut up!”
Immediately realizing that Cody was proposing for real, Betsy began to cry. She hugged Cody, kissed him, and made sure to say “YES!” Once the shock wore off, Cody left for a moment. He returned with a wooden box. Inside there was a bottle of wine from a tasting they shared in Florence, Italy (their first international trip together) upon graduating college. During that trip, years before, Cody bought a bottle of wine during their tasting and had it shipped home. He waited for the right moment to bring it out-and Panama it was. His timing could not have been more perfect.
